"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
-Steve Jobs
Not every business that looks great, is great. The same could be said opposite. What makes businesses great is the purpose they serve and how the business owners treat the business. Businesses are created to give consumers a product or service. You could say that businesses exist for their owners and workers to make money, yes, but without a product or service they would fail.
Businesses that fail, fail for many reasons. They lose the ability to sell at the capacity they need to survive. Often times they lose touch with their respective markets and fail to adapt to technological advances. Running a business is a balance. On one hand, you have the ability to operate at your own pace and work with your own flexibility. On the other hand, if you cannot stay disciplined within an area of the business, the rest of the business suffers.
BUILD YOUR HOUSE
Building a business is a lot like building a house from scratch. First, you have to learn a skill or develop a product to sell. You begin studying ways to implement your ideas about taking your skill or product to market. This is the base layer of your home. Learning and developing. Often times long term home owners will add to their foundations later on to improve their home. Similarly, you may find yourself farther in business, taking time to refresh and learn the basics to new concepts and ideas that add on to what you already know.
Occasionally the house will have some problems. Maybe the air conditioning runs out, or your window has a bad leak. If you neglect to fix these areas of the home, your house begins to deteriorate in living quality just like in business. If you neglect small issues within your organization or company, you may find yourself living at a much more troublesome condition. It's important to find ways to stay in motion and on track to reach the goals set fourth by the company.
After a while your single bedroom house becomes a medium sized home big enough for a family or roommates. Successful businesses can often reach a point where the amount of opportunity they have is overwhelming. They reach a point where they may consider bringing another person(s) in on their operation to help sustain the business while owners pursue other opportunities and slowly take on more of a managerial position. The house slowly grows over time and if you keep at it and treat it with respect, you'll find yourself living a sustainable and long-term lifestyle.
Treat your house with care and it becomes a comfortable place to live. You can build it however you want!
